Amy Edmundson first introduced us to the term in 1999. Her research and findings matter deeply to teams and the leaders that create, inherit, and develop them. Importantly, it matters to you and the many clients I partner with. Every. Single. Day.

So, is it a series of warm, friendly, affirming sessions?

I wouldn’t say that. Prof. Jonathan Passmore explains that it is not enough for the coach to be an affirming cheerleader. It is even more important to be a challenger. To be the one who turns the chair towards the fire when it gets hot and uncomfortable. And to hold our client in the space of discomfort for the sole purpose of facilitating insight.

Because I work hard to earn your trust and create a safe space for our coaching, I will also challenge you in areas that may seem uncomfortable. And it is always with the intent to understand how that may be serving (or not serving) you. But never without your permission to go there and explore. Both choices have implications.
